In the modern world, for most people the word “musical” is traditionally associated with American Broadway, the shining lights and posters of many theaters, each of which beckons a charmed passerby to go through wide open doors and at least look out of the corner of his eye to a music show.
Of course, the musical as a genre really originated in America, combining operetta, ballet, variety show and drama on the same stage. The first musical is traditionally considered the production of “Black Crook”, which premiered in September 1866 in New York. Then, in the following decades, a musical boom hit Europe, the peak of which fell on Great Britain, which many today, alas, tend to forget.
A new genre took root in England in no time. Perhaps the greatest role in the rapid formation of musicals Continue reading
20 years ago, in 1996, Kula Shaker released the album “K”, which became the cult album of Britpop and was sold in 2 million copies. The fifth album “K2.0”, according to the leader of the group, Crispian Mills, has incorporated the best of all the experiments with the styles that the group performed: from the psychedelic sound of “K” to the folk elements in the previous album of the group “Piligrims Progress”.
During a 20-minute interview with Crispian, catching a cold, Matthew Sherne was able to discuss the new album, his preference for analog equipment and the reasons why well-known bands should take more risks.
Why did you decide to name the new album “K2.0”? Continue reading

The Moscow English-speaking group Gayana is a fresh project of the domestic music scene, which performs refined eighteenth-century pop music. The unique music and style of Gayana turned out to be in demand both at the country’s largest festivals and at various club venues.
We won’t tell further, we think Gayana and Vladimir Boytsov themselves will be able to present their team.
Here’s a situation for you, I’m an ordinary listener. Some music is playing in my player. One melody replaces another, why should I focus on your song? What can catch me, spoiled by modern diversity, in your work?
Gayana Boytsova: We do not pursue the goal of hooking the listener. In commercial pop music there are different clichés for this, but we are not interested in and do not use it, since our only task is to write sincerely about what is of particular importance to us, without any tricks. I can assume that just the sound and style, which are not like all the musical diversity, can catch. Those who know English can be hooked on texts whose themes are not peculiar to pop music as such. Three years ago, Guy and Howard Lawrence, speaking as Disclosure, began trying to make a difference in the radio charts for the better. Last September, the band released their second album, “Caracal”. Henier Richter decided to interview them and met in Berlin two mature, confident and very dissimilar musicians.
I want to apologize right away: three years ago we released an article about Disclosure’s debut album “Settle” under the title “Mama’s Sons.” Not too nice of us. But what can you do if there are two such nice, polite and at the same time young guys who have made a perfect start in their careers thanks to their musical parents? Father is the guitarist in the group, mother produces radio jingles. Continue reading
